The south-western neighborhoods of the city of Boston include Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Hyde Park, and West Roxbury. They are known for their public parks and green spaces, such as Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum, the Forest Hills Cemetery, Allendale Woods, and a substantial portion of Boston’s Emerald Necklace, including Jamaica Pond and Franklin Park. Between them, these four neighborhoods have a population of over 130,000 residents, about 20% of the residents of Boston. New multi-use developments in these neighborhoods promise to attract more businesses and residents to these already-vibrant areas of the city.
Like the rest of the city of Boston, these neighborhoods are part of Suffolk County and are subject to the jurisdiction of the Suffolk courts. Cases arising out of these neighborhoods are heard in the Suffolk Superior Court, the Suffolk Probate and Family Court, and the Boston Housing Court (all located downtown near Government Center), and the West Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court, which is located at 445 Arborway in the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain. Cases that might be heard in the West Roxbury Division of the BMC include certain criminal cases (both misdemeanors and felonies), civil cases where the amount at issue is less than $25,000, and small claims cases worth less than $7,000. The West Roxbury Division of the BMC also hears eviction matters and issues harassment prevention and abuse prevention orders.
